Hi, My name is Larry D. Sonnier. I made my first wood bowl in the 2nd grade and has been a passion of mine every since. I am retired now and started turning bowls, vessels, plates and goblets as a hobby. I enjoy it and wanted to share it with the rest of the world. There were several people in the area that were interested in what I was creating. They requested me to turn pieces for them. God has really blessed me with a gift to see whatever I am going to turn before I start. I have a unique process and wood that make my pieces one of a kind.
I fumbled around with wood in our local area and was missing something in some of the pieces which I was turning. So I searched across the United States and out of the country. In doing so, I thouht I knew a lot about some of the woods that I had been looking for. It came to me that I lacked a lot of knowledge in the different woods of the world. I knew I would need to find a mentor, someone that I could look up to and trust to lead me in the right direction. My quest went on for several years. Personally, I believe that God lead me to find the right person to mentor.
That mentor, Lyman Frugia was found near me in Vidor, TX. He is not only a man of knowledge in wood working but is very humble and patient. When he finally invited me to his home and I was fortunate enough to admire his wood works and wood shop, I was amazed when I entered into his wood shop to see that his lathe and tools were older than me and some of his tools were home made. I then realized that it was not the tools that make the piece but the desire and vision. Because of my mentor I have accomplished my techniques in wood turning.
